Q. How does Salacia oblonga work?

Emerging science now shows promise of natural and traditional Ayurvedic methods to maintain healthy blood glucose metabolism. Salacia oblonga has a long history of use and effectiveness in supporting blood sugar metabolism. Plants in the Salacia genus contain various beneficial nutraceuticals, including anthocyanidins, catechins, phenolic acids, quinones, and triterpenoids. The major bioactive compounds in Salacia oblonga are xanthonoid, glucoside, mangiferin, as well as two unique compounds, salacinol and kotalanol. The oblonga species has been the subject of several clinical studies since 2005 for its ability to support healthy blood sugar levels.

Researchers have confirmed that the multiple bioactive compounds in Salacia oblonga (salacinol, kotalanol, mangiferin and kotalagenin 16-acetate) work in much the same way as alpha glucosidase inhibitors, which bind to intestinal enzymes and break down carbohydrates in the body. This process helps to regulate and support healthy blood sugar metabolism.

New research is also demonstrating Salacia oblonga’s potential to support healthy heart and renal function (Rathore SS et al. “Effects of Salacia oblonga on Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients: A Prospective Study.” Saudi J Kidney Dis Transpl 2015;26(1):61-66.)

Q. Why is water extraction important?

Water is the most natural solvent possible and much more gentle than alcohol or other industrial solvents, like acetone or hexane, that can leave behind residue traces or alter bioavailability of a plant’s active constituents. Princeton Vitamins uses water as a solvent.

Q. Why is standardization important?

A ratio based herbal extract is made by extracting the biochemical constituents of a plant from its cellular structural components using a liquid solvent. The scientific method of standardization involves measuring and extracting a plant’s compounds that are believed to be responsible for its active, health promoting properties. Products that are standardized are prepared to specifications/ratios shown to be.
